Sam Timer, Coach 1970-1984

Coach Sam Timer is a 1953 graduate of Montclair State College and earned his master’s degree from Calvin Coolidge College in 1961.  He began his coaching career at North Plainfield High School, where he was named New Jersey High School Coach of the Year in 1957, and held subsequent positions at the University of Virginia, Wake Forest, Virginia Military Academy, Cornell and Duke.  In 1963, while backfield coach at Virginia, the team led the Atlantic Coast Conference in total offense and in 1974 his Allegheny team was among the NCAA Division III top-10 in two defensive categories.

Timer was named PAC Coach of the Year in 1976 and produced four All-Americans during his tenure.  In his 13 years at Allegheny, Timer’s teams broke four all-time PAC grid marks.  After leaving the Gators, Timer coached quarterbacks at Boston College, including 1984 Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie.  He retired in 1989 but came out of retirement in 1991 to coach a single season with the Birmingham Bulls of the British Football League.
