Brenda Bates was a guard on the women’s basketball team from 1981-85 who still holds school records in field goals in a game and field goal attempts in a game.  Her 501 career field goals are second in Allegheny history, and though it has since moved to sixth place, she set the then all-time scoring record with 1,075 career points.  For three consecutive seasons she led the Gators in scoring and she helped Allegheny to two NCAA Tournaments, one NCAC Championship and one Women’s Keystone Conference.  She also earned four varsity letters as a softball player and was named to the all-region team when she finished the 1984 season batting .338 with 22 runs and 29 RBIs.  In 1983, she led the Gators to an East Regional championship and a fifth place finish at the NCAA Championship, where she earned all-tournament team honors.  A native of Troy, Pa., and Troy Senior High School, she graduated from Allegheny with a degree in psychology.
