Allegheny 21, Lycoming 14 (OT)
December 8, 1990, Bradenton, Fla.
Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl
In a contest played like a true championship game, the Gators outlasted South Region champion and cross-state rival for the overtime victory and the school's first football national championship. Lycoming dominated the first half, taking a 14-0 lead on a pair of long scoring drives. The Gators regrouped and mounted a championship-caliber drive midway through the third quarter, moving 72 yards in 16 plays with Jeff Filkovski going the final 11 for the score on the option play. Allegheny tied it with another long drive, this time going 73 yards in 12 plays, with Filkovski finding flanker Julio Lacayo for a 7-yard scoring toss. Lycoming got one final chance to grab the victory in regulation, but kicker John Phillips' 42-yard field goal attempt came up short, sending the game to overtime. In Division III championship overtime, each team gets the ball, starting at the opponent's 25. If the score remains tied after each gets a possession, the teams continue trading possessions until a winner is determined. Allegheny got the ball first and scored after three plays as Filkovski found tight end Kurt Reiser over the middle for a 15-yard scoring pass. It was fitting that Filkovski would be part of the eventual game-winner as he had thrown for 115 yards with a pair of touchdowns, while picking up another 64 yards with a score on the ground. Lycoming still had a chance to keep the playoff alive. But after an initial completion, Warrior quarterback Ed Dougherty was sacked by linebacker Darren Hadlock and had his next pass batted down by nose guard Jeff Pearson. On the final play, cornerback Tony Bifulco outleaped Lyco split end Dave Bodmar for an interception in the endzone to preserve the game and the title.
