The Gators rolled past Central College (Iowa), the West Regional champion, 24-7, in a Division III playoff semifinal. Allegheny, which had not won a playoff game before this season, advanced to the Division III national title game, known as the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Although the Flying Dutchmen hung around for a half, trailing by just three (10-7) at intermission, the Gators were never seriously threatened. In the scoreless first quarter, for example, Allegheny outgained Central by 127 yards, twice driving by more than 50 yards. And after tailback Jerry O'Brien (23 carries 136 yards, two TDs) opened the second quarter by dashing 15 yards on a draw for the game's first score, the Gators were poised for a rout. But the Flying Dutchmen rebounded, evening the score 11 minutes later as fullback Rich Kacmarynski plunged into the end zone from one yard out (capping an 11-play 43 yard drive). Allegheny regained the momentum moments later, however, when Steve Boucher kicked a 44-yard field goal 53 seconds before halftime. The Gator defense then took control, shutting the Flying Dutchmen down and out over the next 30 minutes. Indeed, 5 minutes into the second half, Allegheny's defense blew open the game, stuffing Kacmarynski on fourth-and-one at the Allegheny 34. The Gator offense proceeded to march 66 yards in 10 plays, grabbing a 10-point lead. In the fourth quarter, a Brian Kane interception (the Gators' seventh post-season pick) iced the win: Three plays later, Jeff Filkovski tossed a 35-yard strike to wideout Rob Gardner for the game's final TD. Filkovski continued to whatever was necessary; against Central he rushed for 89 yards on 11 attempts.
