Allegheny 31, Dayton 23
November 24, 1990, Meadville, Pa.
Allegheny surprised defending national champion Dayton, 31-23 halting the nation's longest winning streak at 22. The Flyers, who won 38 consecutive games against Division III teams, threatened to blow the game out early, grinding out two touchdowns on their first two possessions. But Allegheny's defense stifled Dayton's powerful rushing attack for the rest of the half. Six minutes into the second half, however, the Flyers were knocking on the door again, third down and goal from the Allegheny 1. After an illegal procedure penalty pushed Dayton back to the 6, Allegheny free safety David LaCarte reversed the game's momentum with a timely interception. The Gators quickly put together an 11-play, 87-yard march, capped by a 17-yard TD toss by Jeff Filkovski to tailback Jerry O'Brien. Although Dayton tied the game at 17, the Gators stormed right back. Driving 68 yards in eight plays, Allegheny regained the lead for good when Filkovski audibled against a safety blitz and threw a 27-yard strike to Kurt Reiser who made a fingertip catch in the end zone. Three minutes later, O'Brien broke three tackles on a draw play and rumbled 75 yards down the left sideline for his third TD (two rushing, one receiving) of the day. For the game, O'Brien ran for 137 yards on 16 carries (8.6 avg.). Allegheny had won 12-straight games when a Gator rushes for 100 yards. Darren Hadlock made a game-high 16 stops (eight solo) LaCarte had nine tackles.
