Allegheny 14, OWU 10
October 27, 1990, Meadville, Pa.
Homecoming. For the third straight year, Ohio Wesleyan and Allegheny battled to decide the NCAC title. Allegheny's potent offense stumbled early, as quarterback Jeff Filkovski fumbled on the fourth play from scrimmage. The Battling Bishops capitalized eight plays later, when Kevin SIms (33 carries, 127 yards) pounded it in from the Allegheny 2-yard line. Then OWU (undefeated and ranked third in the nation) sat back, milking their 7-0 lead. The Battling Bishops, which had allowed only 18 points all season, appeared to ice the game with a Todd Showalter 22-yard field goal late in the third quarter. But Allegheny co-captain David LaCarte blocked a Mike Campbell punt into the arms of safety Dale Shaw, who went 21 yards for a touchdown. After two decisive Gator defensive stands (three and out), AC marched 76 yards in nine plays. With 34 seconds left, tailback Jerry O'Brien capped the drive with a two yard toss to wide receiver Jim Carroll. Linebacker Darren Hadlock had 17 tackles and NCAC Player-of-the-Week LaCarte made 14 to lead the Gators.
