MEADVILLE, Pa. - Allegheny senior
Bobby Over shrugged off cold and muddy conditions at the Robertson Athletic Complex, as he captured his second straight North Coast Athletic Conference championship, while leading the Gators to a second-place team finish.
Over earned NCAC Runner of the Year laurels for a second consecutive season, finishing the 8K race in 26:35 to win the event by 19 seconds. He led from tape to tape to become the first two-time NCAC champion since Allegheny's Kevin Pool in 2003 and '04.Â
As a team, the #21 Gators placed four runners in the top-12, but were unable to defend their 2012 conference crown, as #19 Wabash saw five runners finish among the top nine to finish with a team score of 30.
Over was one of three Gators to be named First Team All-NCAC, as sophomore
Logan Steiner took third (27:04) and junior
James Rynes fifth (27:12).Â
Alex Simon was a fourth Gator to earn all-conference status, taking Second Team laurels with a 12th-place time of 27:36.Â
Just shy of the one-mile mark, it became a three-man race, between Over, Steiner, and Dalton Boyer of Wabash. The threesome remained closely packed until the two-mile mark, when Over pulled away, and continually increased his lead until crossing the finish line by nearly a 200-yard margin. Boyer and Steiner remained close until the final quarter mile, when the Wabash junior pulled away to top Steiner by nine seconds for second place.
The remaining top eight places were hotly contested, as the fourth through eighth finishers were separated by nine seconds, including a three second gap between fourth and sixth and a half-second margin between seventh and eighth.Â
Rounding out the Gators' top seven, senior
Jack Denison took 27th, timed in 28:22, freshman
Dan Cheung 39th (28:50), and senior
Tom DeAscentis 41st (28:54).
After Over was crowned Runner of the Year, Wabash claimed the remaining two top individual honors, as Little Giant freshman Mason McKinney was named Newcomer of the Year after a 14th-place finish, and Wabash mentor Roger Busch was crowned conference Coach of the Year.
The Gators will have a two-week layoff before returning to action at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, taking place at Gettysburg on Nov. 16.Â
