EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's cross country team opened the 2025 campaign with a challenging race against 10 Division II opponents at Saturday's Doug Watts Open, hosted by nearby PennWest Edinboro.
The only Division III program at the race, Allegheny placed eighth out of 11 teams with 217 points. The Gators managed to beat Indiana University (Pa.) (232), Commonwealth University - Mansfield (272), and Seton Hill University (317). With a strong 39-point effort and six top-15 finishers, Slippery Rock University captured Saturday's team title.
Leading the way for the Gators were junior
Shyann Rulander (Warren, Pa./Warren) and first-year
Gabriella Palmer (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley). Rulander completed the five-kilometer course in 19:57.3 and beat Edinboro's Meryn Boardman (19:57.7) to the finish line by a mere 0.4 seconds. Rulander placed 30th out of 113 total runners, while Palmer made her collegiate debut in 40th place with a time of 20:21.4.
