SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- Allegheny College junior
Chloe Bonson (Penn Township, Pa./Penn-Trafford) led the women's cross country team at Saturday's Great Lakes Regional Championships and put herself in position to earn an at-large bid for the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships.
Bonson's breakthrough season continued with an eighth-place performance at regionals at the Blue River Cross Country Course inside Blue River Park in Shelbyville, Indiana. She finished just over nine seconds shy of her six-kilometer personal record with a time of 22:09.30. Bonson finished on a strong note by moving up four spots after being clocked in 12th place through the first three kilometers.
Selections for this year's national championship race will be announced by the NCAA on Sunday, November 17. Bonson is expected to be one of the individual at-large runners from the Great Lakes Region to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Saturday, November 23.
In addition to Bonson, Allegheny placed three inside the top 40 and five inside the top 100 in a field that featured 270 total competitors. Senior
Marrin Crist (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) also collected All-Region honors by finishing 23rd with a time of 22:45.7.
Nelly Stafford (Middletown, Md./Middletown) was just shy of an All-Region award in 37th at 23:01.7.
One of Allegheny's former North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opponents, DePauw University, won the regional championship with 91 points, edging Calvin University by just three points. Faith Duncan of Wilmington University had the only sub-21-minute time, placing first overall at 20:59.0.
