Allegheny Grads Shaw, Pellis to Ref Sunday's Rams-Lions Wild Card Game

DETROIT -- Fans of Allegheny College football may recognize two faces at Ford Field on Sunday afternoon when the Detroit Lions host the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs.

A pair of former Gators, Dale Shaw Jr. '91 and Mark Pellis '94, will be a part of the officiating crew on the field Sunday. Shaw is a side judge who wears uniform No. 104, and Pellis is an umpire sporting No. 104. Allegheny is one of only four current Division III institutions represented on the officiating crews in the wild-card round and the only one with multiple alums.

Shaw and Pellis shared one season at Allegheny. As a senior, Shaw was a standout safety on the Gator defense and helped guide Allegheny to a national championship in 1990. That fall, Pellis was a freshman on the defensive line.

In November 2020, Shaw, a native of Tarentum, Pennsylvania, made headlines as a member of the first-ever all-Black officiating crew in NFL history.

Shaw has been an official in the NFL since 2013 and has covered a playoff game in five of the past six seasons. Off the gridiron, he is regional business director for Johnson & Johnson. Pellis was hired from the college football ranks in 2014 and is making his sixth appearance in the playoffs. The Greensburg, Pennsylvania, native also doubles as a wealth management advisor for the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.

The Rams will take on the Lions at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14. Fans can tune in on NBC or stream the game live via Peacock.
