MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Not even the lingering chill of the late-March snowfall could cool the momentum of Allegheny College athletics this weekend. On Saturday, March 28, college leadership, coaches, and student-athletes gathered at the Robertson Athletic Complex to break ground on the new 12,000-square-foot Baird Center for Football Operations.
The project, made possible by a generous $1.5 million gift from lead donors Kevin and Lisa Fiedor Baird, both 1984 Allegheny graduates, marks a significant investment in Allegheny College's commitment to deliver a premier NCAA Division III student-athlete experience.
Allegheny College President Ron Cole emphasized that the new center is part of a much larger surge in institutional support. "This project comes during a historic period of donor support in our 211-year history with over $200 million in gifts to date," said President Cole. "We are here because that momentum is real, and because our entire community believes in the trajectory of this College. When we move forward together, there is no limit to what we can achieve."
The new center will consolidate several essential resources under one roof, making it one of the few Division III facilities in the country to do so. It will feature new coaching staff offices, a modern football locker room and student-athlete lounge, expansive meeting rooms designed for hosting alumni events and prospective student-athlete visits, and dedicated space for student-athlete development. By housing study hours, tutoring, and player support under the same roof as coaches' offices, the College is exemplifying the holistic student-athlete experience.

We are ensuring that our student-athletes have every tool necessary to win on Saturdays and, more importantly, to build the foundation for purposeful lives on Mondays," President Cole said. "It is why we are recognized by The Princeton Review as a top 25 school nationally for best athletic facilities. I have no doubt that this new facility will push us even higher up the list.

While the building will serve as the primary home for the football program, its impact will be felt across the entire department.
Bill Ross, director of athletics and recreation, spoke to the effect this expansion will create for other Gator teams.
"Many say that athletics serves as the 'front porch' for a college. This project will make that metaphor a reality—the new building is literally positioned to be the new front porch to the Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex," said Ross. "Its construction will spark a domino effect that will benefit all of our outdoor sports that call Robertson their home."
For
Braden Layer, head football coach, the groundbreaking represents a physical commitment to the program's upward trajectory. "This school, these players, and our proud alumni deserve a consistent winner," said Coach Layer. "As we look for every way to gain a competitive advantage and help our players become the best versions of themselves, this facility becomes the foundation of that effort. The future is incredibly bright, and we are excited to earn the right to be in this building in the months to come."
The facility's namesakes, Kevin and Lisa Baird, have a deep-rooted history with Allegheny. Kevin Baird, now the CEO of International Automotive Components Group, was an Academic All-American and All-Conference football player. Lisa Baird was a leader in Allegheny Student Government and a guiding voice in the Panhellenic Council. Their gift will help create a lasting space for leadership, teamwork and student-athlete development.
As the ceremony concluded and shovels met the dirt, the message was clear: Allegheny is building more than offices and locker rooms. It is building a home for the next generation of leaders.
