ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Two program records were broken by the Allegheny College track and field team at the University of Mount Union's Last Chance Meet, hosted by the Purple Raiders at Kehres Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday.
Perhaps the most important record broken came in the men's decathlon. As alluded to by the meet's name, it was the last chance for senior
Stephen Cullinan (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) to put himself in position to secure a bid for next week's NCAA Division III Championships. The multis specialist finished as the runner-up with an Allegheny-record 6,331 points. As a result, Cullinan climbed to 25th in the nation. With the top 22 declared student-athletes qualifying for the NCAA Championships, he now sits within reach of a potential championship berth.
Cullinan's record-setting decathlon included five personal records. He was first in the discus and javelin with PR throws of 34.38 meters and 47.43 meters, respectively. He also had PRs in the 100-meter dash (11.48 seconds), 400-meter dash (51.07 seconds), and 1,500-meter race (4:44.87), and was second in all three events.
On the women's side,
Mihaela Toader (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) ran both the 100- and 200-meter sprints on Thursday. For the second time this season, the fleet-footed senior broke the program record in the 100, as she finished third with a time of 12.15 seconds in the finals. In the 200, Toader placed second in 24.83 seconds.
