Allegheny ties W&J 2-2 on Wednesday

Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Allegheny men's soccer team earned its first draw of the season, 2-2, in a nonconference matchup against Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday (Oct. 2).

Eddie Opalko (Springdale, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) started the scoring early as Nicholas Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) forced a W&J turnover in the offensive zone and pushed the ball into the center for Opalko, who shot to the goalie's right to notch the opening tally in the fourth minute. The goal was the junior's fourth of the season.

The Presidents made a late push in the first half as a free kick in the 41st minute found its way into the 18-yard box but a team save by Allegheny denied the W&J equalizer.

Ryan Clydesdale (South Park, Pa./South Park) nearly doubled the lead in the final ten seconds of the first half, but the ball caromed off the crossbar as the horn sounded for the halftime break.

W&J found the equalizing goal in the 57th minute as a corner was headed in by Joey Feola.

In the 70th minute, Danny Reid (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) collected a ball near the Presidents goal but fired it just high, keeping the game tied at one.

W&J took its first lead of the game in the 76th minute as Alex Molina dribbled his way into the Allegheny goalie box and passed it towards the penalty stripe where Michael Komaniak was waiting to plant the ball to the keeper's left.

Matt Massucci (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) tied the game in the 86th minute when a cross into the box found Reid, who put the ball on the ground for Massucci, and Massucci obliged with a stinger into the bottom left corner of the goal.

In the first overtime period, W&J looked to net the deciding goal, but a sliding stop near the six-yard box by Shane Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) prevented the ball from crossing the goal line, and the game remained deadlocked at two.

A throw-in from Dillon Thoma (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) in the first minute of double overtime hit off the goalie's hands but knocked off the post and was kept out, denying the Gators yet again.

Taliani and Reid led the team with four shots apiece, and Taliani had a team-high three shots on goal. Six other Gators had at least two shots.

Jack Barron-Sluga (Guelph, Ont./Appleby College) served as the Allegheny keeper and made seven saves.

The Gators return to the field on Saturday (Oct. 5) as they host Denison for a North Coast Athletic Conference showdown at 12:00 p.m.
