Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla.—The Allegheny College women's softball team ended its Spring Games trip with a sweep Friday (March 24).
The Gators downed the University of Southern Maine 4-3 in eight innings in game one, then topped St. Lawrence University 3-2 to end the day.
GAME ONE
The Gators threatened in the bottom of the first.
Jessica Zavolta hit a two-out single to left field.
Jessica Valerino earned a walk to put Zavolta in scoring position, but the Huskies escaped the inning unscathed.
After four scoreless innings, the Huskies struck first in the fifth, plating one run.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth,
Jessica Gordon hit her second single of the game. Zavolta followed up with a single that moved Gordon to third. On the next batter, Gordon came across the plate on a passed ball, tying the game at one.
Neither team found the plate in the seventh, bringing on extra innings.
The Huskies got to work fast in the eighth, scoring a run on the first batter to give them the lead. They added one more in the frame to take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
Sarah Rogan started the eighth on second base. With one out,
Paige Blinkiewicz hit a shot to left center, bringing Rogan home and the gap to one. Blinkiewicz reached second on a passed ball to move into scoring position. Zavolta followed up by running out an infield single to the third baseman, putting Blinkiewicz at third.
Valerino provided the winning hit for the Gators. She hit a shot towards the left field line, bringing Blinkiewicz home. Zavolta rounded third on the cutoff throw and slid in under the tag to provide the winning walk off run.
Zavolta led the Gator offense, collecting three hits and a run.
Jessica Gordon had a pair of hits and a run. Valerino provided the game winning RBI on a hit. Blinkiewicz had a hit and a RBI. Rogan also had a run in the extra inning.
Mahen pitched the complete game for the Gators, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out three.
GAME TWO
Blinkiewicz led off game two with a single up the middle. Gordon then reached safely on a sac bunt. With runners at first and second, Zavolta was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, the Saints got out of the jam without allowing a run to cross homeplate.
In the second, Raachel Ramsey hit a one-out infield single.
Maria DiDonato moved her to second with a sac bunt. Blinkiewicz followed up with a deep shot over the left field fence, giving the Gators a 2-0 lead.
Blinkiewicz led off the fourth with a double to right center. After moving to third on a Gordon groundout, she came home on an error, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Saints made up some ground in the fifth, plating two to cut the lead to 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints threatened by loading the bases with two outs but
Allison Cabo struck out two to keep the lead intact.
The Gators kept their one run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Cabo continued to pitch well, striking out the first batter. The next batter then flied out to Gordon in left field. After the Saints got a base runner, Blinkiewicz made the final out with a catch in foul territory, completing the sweep for the Gators.
Blinkiewicz led the Gators with three hits, two RBI and two runs. Her homerun was the second of the season. Gordon had a pair of hits in the game while Ramsey had a hit and a run.
Abrianna Sadler also had a hit.
Cabo pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run and six hits with seven strikeouts.
The Gators are back in action March 29 for a nonconference doubleheader against Geneva.
