Softball Drops Contest to Waynesburg

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team continued Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a home doubleheader against Waynesburg Tuesday (March 24). The Gators dropped game one 8-3. Game two was halted due to darkness after six innings and will resume at a later date with the Gators trailing 11-9.
 
Game One - Waynesburg 8, Allegheny 3
 
Waynesburg got out to an early lead, scoring a run in the first. They threatened for more with a runner on second, but right fielder Jayla Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) threw out a runner trying to take third after a flyout. 
 
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the third, plating a run off three hits to make it 2-0.
 
The Gators put runners on second and third with two outs in the third after Abby Robinson (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) drew a walk and Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) singled. However, Waynesburg got out of the inning unscathed.
 
Waynesburg tacked on another run in the fourth to make it 3-0.
 
Morgan Kinney (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) hit a one-out double off the top of the center field fence in the bottom of the fourth. Lauren Folino (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) then drew a walk to put two runners on. However, the Yellow Jackets once again got out of the situation without allowing a run across.
 
Allegheny made up two runs in the fifth. Robinson drew her second walk with two outs and stole second. Phillips followed up with an RBI double to the left center gap, bringing Robinson in for the first run. The two-out rally continued as a single by Alaina Sharp (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) brought Phillips in to cut the deficit to one run.
 
The Yellow Jackets pushed their lead back up in the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits and an error.
 
Avery Magee (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) had a pinch hit double in the seventh. Phillips drove her second run in with a single, and Sharp recorded her second hit of the game to put two runners on. Jones loaded the bases on an infield single with two outs, but the Gators were unable to produce another run as they fell in game one, 
 
Inside the Box
  • Phillips had three hits, including a double, while driving in two runs.
  • Sharp had a pair of hits and drove in a run.
  • Jones also finished with a multi-hit game.
  • Magee and Kinney both doubled.
  • Kennedy Stahl (Warriors Mark, Pa./State College Area) pitched 6.0 innings.
Game Two - Waynesburg 11, Allegheny 9 (6 innings)
 
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead once more, going up 6-0 off of six hits in the first. They added two more runs in the second.
 
Kinney had an infield single to start the bottom of the second and advanced on a wild pitch. Folino hit into an error which allowed Kinney to come across the plate. Waynesburg would make up the run in the third, pushing their lead to 9-1.
 
The Gator bats came alive in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs. Robinson singled to start the frame. After moving to third on a Sharp single, Jones drove her in. Kinney then hit her second double of the day, bringing Sharp in to cut the deficit to 9-3. Magee followed up by crushing a two-run home run over the left field fence, cutting the deficit down to three runs. The home run was the first in Magee's collegiate career. The inning continued as Rachel Seneca (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) doubled and Julia Perillo (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) reached on a dropped third strike. Robinson tallied her second hit of the inning, driving in Seneca for the Gators sixth run of the inning.
 
The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the top of the fourth, but the Gators responded in the bottom of the inning. Sharp hit a lead-off triple and scored on a Jones RBI single, making up one of the runs. 
 
In the sixth, Sharp and Jones both had hits to start. Folino drove Sharp in on a line shot towards the feet of the third baseman to cut the deficit to 11-9.  However, After the inning ended, the game was halted due to darkness to be made up at a later date.
