Softball Splits PAC Opener Against Chatham

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play by splitting a home doubleheader against Chatham Saturday (March 21).
 
The Gators took game one 3-1 before falling in game two 5-3.
 
Game One - Allegheny 3, Chatham 1
 
The Cougars broke up the scoreless game in the third, taking advantage of an error to score a run.
 
The Gators took the lead in the fifth. Madalyn Myers (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Abby Robinson (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) had back-to-back hits to start the frame. Alaina Sharp (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) doubled to left center, scoring Myers to tie the game. Robinson would come home on a wild pitch to give the Gators the lead. A Jayla Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) groundout drove Sharp in as the Gators pushed ahead, 3-1. 

Madison Hulse (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) limited the Cougars the last two innings as the Gators opened conference play with a victory.
 
Inside the Box
  • Hulse earned the win, allowing just an unearned run and three hits while striking out three.
  • Robinson and Lauren Folino (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had two hits apiece.
  • Sharp had a RBI double while Jones also drove one in.
  • Morgan Kinney (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), Rachel Seneca (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), Julia Perillo (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), Mackenzie Keber (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge Area) and Myers all registered a hit. 
Game Two - Chatham 5, Allegheny 3
 
Similar to game one, the Cougars got on the board first, scoring a run in the second.
 
The Gators mounted a comeback in the third to take the lead. Robinson had a one-out double to left center. Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) followed up with a RBI single through the right side of the infield, tying the game at one. After a single by Sharp placed runners on the corners, Jones singled to right field, bringing Phillips in and putting the Gators in front. Kinney then hit into an error with two outs, allowing Sharp to score the third run of the inning.
 
Chatham added a run in the sixth to cut the Allegheny lead to 3-2. In the seventh, they rallied for three more to take a 5-3 lead.
 
Allegheny put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to make up the deficit as they fell in game two.
 
Inside the Box
  • Phillips and Jones each drove a run in on one hit.
  • Robinson, Sharp and Seneca also recorded a hit.
  • Kennedy Stahl (Warriors Mark, Pa./State College Area) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing just three earned runs.
News and Notes
  • Allegheny is now 7-1 all-time against Chatham.

The Gators are back at home Tuesday (March 24) as they host Waynesburg.
