Week Six Game Notes: Allegheny at DePauw

THIS WEEK: Allegheny looks to snap a five-game losing skid this Saturday, traveling to North Coast Athletic Conference foe DePauw University.  Coming out of their bye week, the Gators were last in action on Oct. 3, falling 48-9 at Oberlin.  Oberlin rode a superb passing game to victory, as quarterback Lucas Poggiali threw for 524 yards and five touchdowns.  The Gators' Tyler Smith recorded his third 100-yard receiving game of the year, making six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown, with freshman quarterback Logan Lee posting season-highs with 12 completions and 151 yards.  The Gators will also be looking to snap a two-game losing skid against DePauw, as Allegheny's last victory in the series came in 2012 by a 22-20 margin in Meadville.

Just outside of this week's D3Football.com Top 25 poll, DePauw brings an unblemished 5-0 record into play.  Last week, the Tigers topped Wittenberg 35-30, handing Wittenberg just its fourth NCAC loss since 2008.  DePauw quarterback Matt Hunt was named the NCAC Player of the Week after completing 18 of 27 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns, with his brother Andy making nine catches for 207 yards and two touchdowns.  The Tigers enter the week with the most prolific offense in the NCAC, averaging 44 points and 480.2 yards per game.  Matt Hunt has led the way, completing 81 of 115 passes for 1,168 yards and 10 touchdowns.  Defensively, the Tigers surrender 14.6 points per game, as Will Longthorne has nine tackles for loss, and Chris Hawk three sacks.

GAME NOTES (Click to view complete enhanced version)

THE SMITH ARMY KNIFE:   In last week's loss at Oberlin, Allegheny senior wide receiver Tyler Smith eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark for the third time in five games, as he hauled in six grabs for 116 yards and the lone Gator touchdown.  Through five games this season, he ranks in the top five in the North Coast Athletic Conference in nearly every major statistical category for a receiver, including TD receptions (five - second), yards per catch (19.9 - third), receiving yards (458 - fifth), and receiving yards per game (91.9 - fifth).  In addition, Smith's 696 all-purpose yards are good for second in the NCAC, as along with his 458 receiving yards, he has 118 on kick returns, 91 rushing, and 29 on punt returns.  Finally, Smith's six total touchdowns rank third in the NCAC.

A GRANDE DUO:  Entering this week's game at DePauw, two Allegheny seniors are nearing the 1,000 yard marks for their careers.  Running back Nick Deichler has rushed for 975 yards over the past three and a half years, while wide receiver Tyler Smith has tallied 942 yards receiving.

WEALTHY RETURNS:  Allegheny enters its week six matchup at DePauw boasting three of the top 10 kick returns in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  Senior Tyler Smith is second in the conference with an average of 23.6 yards on six returns, one spot ahead of freshman Tyler Balla, who has averaged 23.1 yards on 15 tries.  Fellow rookie Jonah Tanner ranks fourth in the league with an average of 19.0 yards.  All three Gators have at least one return of 35 yards or longer, paced by Balla's 47-yarder in week three vs. Kenyon.

NOSE FOR THE BALL:  Allegheny sophomore outside linebacker Matt Wetzel enters week six leading the North Coast Athletic Conference and ranking third in NCAA Division III with three fumble recoveries, while he is tied for the league lead with two forced fumbles.  Dating back to the 2001 season, only three Allegheny players have tallied four fumble recoveries in a season, including Doug Williams (2011), Andy Schliehauf (2008), and Joe Cowart (2001).

WELL DISCIPLINED:  At the midpoint of the 2015 season, Allegheny ranks as the least penalized team in the North Coast Athletic Conference, with a total of just 18 flags for 202 yards.  The average of 3.6 infractions per game is the sixth lowest in NCAA Division III, while 40.4 penalty yards per game ranks 22nd nationally.  Conversely, Gator opponents have been flagged an average of eight times for 68.4 yards per game, the second most in the NCAC.

VETERAN LEADER:  The 2015 campaign marks the 14th on the sidelines for Allegheny head coach Mark Matlak.  The 14-year tenure is tied for the longest in the program's 122-year history with Sam Timer, who patrolled the sidelines from 1970-83.  A 1978 Allegheny graduate, Matlak starred at running back under Timer from 1974-77, having amassed 2,382 career rushing yards and 28 touchdowns.  Matlak (62) and Timer (60) rank second and third, respectively, in career coaching wins at Allegheny.  Both Matlak and Timer are members of the Allegheny Hall of Fame, with the current coach being inducted in 1989, and Timer in 1992.

GLOBAL GATORS:  Fourteen different states are represented on the Gators' 114-player roster.  The team includes players from California (1), Florida (8), Georgia (1), Maine (2), Maryland (8), Massachusetts (1), Michigan (1), New Jersey (6), New York (16), Pennsylvania (41), Ohio (19), Rhode Island (1), Tennesse (1), and Virginia (1).

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN(S): The Gators' 2015 team captains are an experienced group which includes senior running back Nick Deichler, senior left tackle Zach Harvey, senior defensive end Chris Patrick, and senior wide receiver Tyler Smith.  All three-year letterwinners, Deichler, Smith, and Harvey have been full-time starters in each of the past two seasons, while Patrick opened the 2014 campaign as the starter at defensive end until missing the duration of the season due to injury.

UP NEXT:  Following today, the Gators will close out October by playing their final two home games of the 2015 campaign.  Next Saturday, Oct. 24, the Gators will host Denison at 1 p.m. at Frank B. Fuhrer Field, before playing their home finale on Oct. 31, with a 5 p.m. Senior Day contest against Hiram.

ALLEGHENY VS. DEPAUW
THE SERIES:  This week's meeting is just the fifth all-time between Allegheny and DePauw on the gridiron, with the two teams  splitting the previous four match ups.  Allegheny won the first two tilts against the Tigers, both in Meadville, by scores of 17-10 in 2011 and 22-20 in 2012, DePauw has defeated Allegheny in each of the past two seasons, 23-7 in 2013 and 59-7 in 2014.

LAST MEETING (Oct 25, 2014):  Leading 14-7 in the waning moments of the second quarter, DePauw used a dominating second half to cruise to a 59-7 victory over the Gators in Meadville.  The Tigers scored touchdowns on six consecutive possessions in the second half, with five coming on the ground, as they amassed 419 rushing yards, averaging 7.5 per carry.   Trailing 14-0 with four minutes left in the second quarter, the Gators got on the board when Jon Nigro found Andrew Niklaus for a four-yard touchdown reception.  DePauw closed the second quarter with a field goal as time expired, before cruising over the final 30 minutes of play.

Jack Gruber and Matt Hunt each rushed for 99 yards for the Tigers, with Gruber scoring three times and Hunt once, while Hunt also completed 16 of 21 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns.  The DePauw defense was just as strong as its offense, finishing with five quarterback sacks and limiting the Gators to just nine first downs and 188 yards of total offense, including just one rushing yard.  Nigro completed 16 of 24 passes for 134 yards, with Niklaus making five catches for 39 yards, and Tyler Smith six for 31.  For the Gator defense, Ryan Sherry had 12 tackles, including a sack, while Nick Murgo added 11 stops and Raysean Glenn 10.
