Cleveland, Ohio - A doubles sweep spurred nationally-ranked Case Western's 9-0 victory over the Allegheny women's tennis team at the Cleveland Skating Club.
The Spartans, who entered the match ranked 25th in the nation and fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region, started the match strong, taking all three doubles matches. At the number-two flight, the Gators'
Kathleen McBride and
Laura Steele battled throughout, but came up short, 8-4.
Case Western looked to carry their momentum into singles, but Gator sophomore Sun Moo Koo (pictured above) battled back from an early deficit at the number one singles spot to nearly take the second set. However, she was unable to close out the match, falling 6-2, 7-6 (3). Koo had set points in the second set, but Case's Marianne Bonanno, who is ranked 14th in the region, eventually prevailed.
The Gators (4-4) now turn their attention to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for their annual spring break trip. The squad kicks off the southern swing on Mar. 16, when it takes on the Macalester Scots at 10 a.m. at the Van der Meer Tennis Center.
