MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College's first-year standout,
Gabrielle Bassette (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day School), tied two women's tennis single-season records while leading the Gators to a 7-0 victory over Penn State Behrend on Tuesday evening.
With a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, Bassette tied the team record for doubles wins in a season with 22, matching the total set by Amy Grillo '97 during her senior year. Bassette then added a 6-2, 6-3 triumph in the top singles contest, giving her 42 overall wins, tying the mark set by Steph Stonemetz '99 as a senior in 1998-99.
With one regular-season match remaining on Friday against Case Western Reserve University and at least one NCAA tournament match on the docket, Bassette – the 2025 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Player and Newcomer of the Year – will have a few more opportunities to break Stonemetz's wins record this spring.
At the other end of the singles lineup, fellow first-year
Grace Musser (Gilbertsville, Pa./Perkiomen School) battled for her second win of the season over Penn State Behrend's Madison Gannon. Musser captured the first set, 7-6, after taking the tiebreaker, 7-1. She then rolled to a straight-set victory by claiming the second set, 6-2.
