FREDONIA, N.Y. – Allegheny orchestrated its most emphatic victory in the early part of the 2012 season with a dominating 3-0 victory over previously undefeated Fredonia State on the second day of the Blue Devil Classic.
Alison Buzzard,
Hannah Zangara, and
Ashley Lehr were all named to Saturday's All-Tournament Team, while sophomore defender
Sam Hoderlein received the weekend's top accolade as the Blue Devil Classic Most Valuable Player.
Paced by Hoderlein, Allegheny (4-1-0) has shutout the opposition for 411 consecutive minutes since yielding a goal to Baldwin-Wallace in the 39th minute of the season opener. During that stretch, the Gators knocked back perennial NCAA contender Otterbein, 2011 NAIA Elite 8 qualifier Houghton, and a Fredonia State team that hadn't allowed a goal in three games entering Saturday's tilt against the Gators.
The host Blue Devils were overwhelmed from the first touch by an Allegheny squad that is playing with outstanding confidence. The Gators manufactured two corners and reeled off six shots in the first 15 minutes of action.
In the 22nd minute, Allegheny grabbed a lead it wouldn't come close to relinquishing as
Emily Byers capitalized on a turnover by Fredonia in its own end with her second goal of the campaign. Hoderlein picked up an assist on the 30-yard floater that tipped off the hands of net minder Meaghan Meszaros.
Five minutes later, the Blue and Gold doubled its lead behind a great individual effort by
Emma Loniewski.
Fredonia State didn't get its first shot off until 31 minutes after the opening whistle, but by that point, Allegheny's relentless attack had all but put the game away.
The Blue Devils did piece together a string of quality chances late in the opening half, but a shot by Katie Kleine in the 44th minute clanged off the cross bar, while
Kylie Mason picked up two saves during the final minute to keep the comeback attempt at bay.
Amazingly, Allegheny was even more dominant in the second half. The Gators outshot the Blue Devils, 16-3, over the final 45 minutes while peppering Meszaros with chance after chance.
Allegheny finally extended its advantage in the 73rd minute as sophomore
Greta Hilbrands scored her first goal of the year with an unassisted strike.
The Gators closed the match with a 26-9 advantage in shots.
Junior
Kylie Mason made four saves en route to her fourth consecutive clean sheet.
