Denison Holds Off Allegheny, 2-1

Box Score Box Score

GRANVILLE, Ohio –
Despite a dominating second half by the visiting Gators, Denison was able to hang on in a 2-1 victory over Allegheny in NCAC women's soccer action on Saturday. The Gators received some encouraging news in the setback as second-year midfielder Jaymee Wallace made her long-anticipated return to the lineup, while scoring the Gators only goal of the afternoon.

In an all-too-familiar pattern for the Allegheny faithful, the opposition proved to be opportunistic as Denison grabbed a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the game. In the ninth minute, Jocelyn Festle settled a corner and kicked the ball back to Gen Eng-Surowiec, who delivered her first finish of the season from 25 yards out.

The Big Red doubled their lead in the 31st minute following a free kick by Eng-Surowiec. Festle, who was on the receiving end of the service, headed the ball over the head of Allegheny net minder Kylie Mason and into the upper left 90.

The Gators orchestrated a smothering attack in the second half, outshooting Denison, 9-1. Despite all the chances, only three of the attempts found the target, including Wallace's first goal of the season in the 67th minute that gave the Gators new life. Olivia Cushman set up the strike with a corner while Hannah Zangara flicked the ball toward the net where Wallace was able to head it in to the lower left 90.

In the final few minutes the Gators had a few chances to deliver the equalizer although the attack was whistled off sides on one of the scoring opportunities, and Wallace's shot on goal with just over two minutes left was blocked off the line by the Denison defense.

Allegheny finished the game with a 16-7 advantage in shots, as the team lost in the regular season to the Big Red for the first time in three years.
