NEWVILLE, Pa. – Although Allegheny placed zero emphasis on winning a team title, that's exactly what the nationally-ranked No. 15 men's cross country team did when it finished first out of 26 teams at the Dicksinson Long and Short Invitational, site of the 2012 NCAA Mid-East Regional Championships.
Bobby Over was incredibly workman-like has he blasted from the middle of the pack to win the individual crown.
The Gators ran the first 4k of the 8,000 circuit as a work out. A large contingent of the team ran as a group for the first-half of the race, while thr goal of the coaching staff was to motivate the back of Allegheny's scoring pack.
“We're really looking to develop our second group of guys,” quipped Head Coach
Brent Wilkerson. “We want our men to battle, and that's exactly what we saw today. We continue to have guys stepping up, and we'll need those efforts if we want to achieve our team goals for nationals.”
Over was in 25th at the midway point of the race before kicking it into high gear. He broke through the tape comfortably in 26:01, seven ticks ahead of Swarthmore senior Jacob Phillips.
Logan Steiner was the top Division III rookie in the field, crossing through the chute in 11th-place with a time of 26:45, while senior Kevin Edward finished four seconds back (26:49) in 13th.
Sophomore
James Rynes authored his best career race in the victory. Finishing among the Gators' top five for the first time, Rynes finished 17th overall in 27:01.
Allegheny's scoring was capped by senior
Brennan Hamilton, who continued an unsuspectingly-strong campaign by finishing 22nd out of 235 runners with a time of 27:11. The Gators finished with 25 points, five points ahead of Dickinson, and eight points ahead of a contingent from Navy.
Sophomore
Alex Simon and junior
