Carnegie Mellon Tops Allegheny to Stay Undefeated

Box Score Box Score

MEADVILLE, Pa. –
Carnegie Mellon can still count itself among the thinning ranks of the unbeaten after netting a pair of first-half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over Allegheny in women's soccer action on Wednesday.

The Tartans (5-0-2) and Gators (4-4-0) finished the afternoon with an equal number of shots (6) and corners (2), but Allegheny's regional rival made sure to capitalize on its opportunities as CMU scored on two of its first three shots.

Brianna Magill was credited with her first goal of the season in the eighth minute as the Tartans grabbed an early lead they wouldn't relinquish. Ashley Lehr authored the first attempt of the game by either team two minutes earlier, but the Tartans scored on a counter-attack following the Gators' initial chance.

Rachel Contopoulos set up the score with a cross into the middle, while Magill turned at the 18 and floated a shot beyond the outstretched hands of sophomore Gabby Curtis. Magill's shot appeared to be heading wide, but the ball snuck inside the top right corner.

CMU stretched its lead to two in the 36th minute with a goal directly off a corner. Lucy Havens served the ball from the far side, while Cecilia Zischkau directed the cross into the net for her first strike of the year.

Solid opportunities were far and far between for both sides in the second half, and although changes in the lineup resulted in better play for the Blue Gold, Allegheny was unable to solve a Carnegie Mellon defense that has only allowed two goals all season.

The Gators, who have lost three straight for just the second time in 15 years, open up conference play on Saturday with a home date against Wittenberg. First touch is scheduled for noon.
