CLEVELAND, Ohio – In what amounted to a two-team duel, nationally-ranked No. 15 Allegheny edged Case Western Reserve at the 2012 Bill Sudeck Classic, 26-29. Led by senior
Bobby Over, who broke the tape for the individual win, the Gators opened the season with a victory on Case's home course for the third consecutive year.
“Any time you can start the season with a win, I think that's a good thing,” said Head Coach
Brent Wilkerson. “The heat had an adverse affect on the entire field, and it didn't help that we just wrapped two weeks of high mileage. That said, it was a solid start to the season against a competitive Case Western Reserve team.”
After hanging back for a majority of Saturday's race, Over took control during the final stretch of the course. Finishing the 6,000-meter circuit in 19:43, he held off a stiff challenge by Case's Ethan Teare and Chris Kelly in picking up his first victory since winning the NCAA Mid East Regional last fall.
The Gators swept fourth through sixth in the individual results, paced by senior
Kevin Edwards, who split 20:05. Freshman
Logan Steiner crossed nine seconds later en route to a strong collegiate debut, while
Brennan Hamilton continued to build on an outstanding pre-season as he finished in 20:16.
The difference on Saturday came at the back end of the scoring contingent, where sophomore
James Rynes and senior
Jack Denison ensured a victory for the Blue and Gold. Rynes bettered his time from last year on the Squire Vallee Farm course by over one minute, while Denison's improvement from 2011 was also significant. Crossing the finish in 20:30 and 20:33, respectively, a three-second swing against a pair of Spartan runners marked the differential on the team board.
