GREENCASTLE, Ind. – DePauw orchestrated a stunning finish en route to a, 2-1, overtime victory against Allegheny on Saturday in the regular-season finale. The streaking Gators, who had won five straight matches entering the weekend, didn't receive the help they needed following the loss and will miss the conference playoffs despite playing in the NCAC title game the last two seasons.
Allegheny (9-8-1, 4-4-0 NCAC) completely dominated the second half, and after authoring the game's first finish in the 71st minute, the team appeared poised to clinch a berth to the postseason.
It was a pair of free kicks that ultimately doomed the Gators. The Blue and Gold was given a yellow card in the 87th minute. On the ensuing set piece from 25 yards out, Angela Cotherman buried the equalizer. The shot, which served as DePauw's first of the half, sent the tilt into overtime.
Three minutes into the extra session, a penalty in the defensive third resulted in another free kick attempt by Cotherman. This time from 28 yards, Cotherman hammered home the unassisted strike into the upper 90 as the Tigers celebrated their probable inclusion in the postseason while leaving an inspired late-season surge by the Gators just short.
The Gators grabbed a 1-0 lead as
Michelle Holcomb cashed in her second goal of the season on a pass from rookie defender
Sarah Shindler.
Allegheny outshot DePauw, 12-5, for the game, including an 8-1 advantage in the second half. The Gators also manufactured eight corners compared to just one corner kick for the Tigers. Controlling possession for nearly the entire game, the Tigers ended up scoring on their final two shot attempts of the day.
With the loss, Allegheny needed several other teams to lose in what turned out to be an incredibly tight conference finish. The Gators received two of the results they needed, but a victory by Denison over Oberlin, secured the final spot in the NCAC tournament for the Big Red.
