BETHANY, W. Va -- The Allegheny softball team dropped a pair of decisions, 5-1 and 6-1, in a non-conference doubleheader against Bethany on Saturday.
The Gators (7-8) took the day's first lead, scoring one run in the first inning of game one, but after that, the Bison (9-5) took the diamond over.
Maggie Bodenlos led off the opener with a double, advanced to third on a single by Sara Doan and scored on
Stephanie Fort's single.
Bethany answered right back with a run in its half of the first, culminating with Maria Vallone's RBI single, which drove in Chelsea Butler.
The Bison took the lead for good in the third. Butler smacked an RBI double and Ashley Marinacci had an RBI single, putting the hosts up 3-1. Vallone added a run-scoring single in the sixth when Bethany added two insurance runs.
Brittany Rung (4-2) suffered the loss for Allegheny. She had four strikeouts and three walks. Doan batted 2-for-3.
Winning pitcher Emily Jump (6-3) went the distance for the Bison, allowing one run on five hits. She recorded three strikeouts and one walk. Vallone was 3-for-4 at the plate.
In game two, the hosts took an immediate lead with single runs in the first and second innings. A fifth-inning home run by Bodenlos cut Allegheny's deficit in half before the Bison responded with a four-run fifth.
Vallone laced an RBI double in the first for Bethany and Powell added an RBI single in the second.
After Bodenlos's blast, Bethany's Bridgitte Faust hit an RBI double and Marinacci hammered a three-run homer.
Bodenlos finished with a 3-for-4 game while Doan went 2-for-4. Doan has now connected multiple hits in four straight contests.
In the pitcher's circle, Fort (1-2) worked 4 1/3 innings before Amanda Downey finished up in the final 1 2/3. Both hurlers recorded one strikeout each. Downey did not allow a run.
For Bethany, Cortney Newland (3-2) pitched a complete game. She scattered eight hits and struck out one batter.
The Gators will be in action next on Wednesday when they open North Coast Athletic Conference play against the defending conference tournament champ, Hiram. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
