Men's Golf Repeats, Hassenplug Three-Peats as PAC Champions

Complete Results

BOARDMAN, Ohio --
Allegheny College men's golf repeated as Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champions and Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) three-peated as the individual medalist at the final round of the PAC Spring Championships Saturday at Mill Creek's South Course.

Although the spring half of the tournament was affected by rain on Friday and cool temperatures on Saturday, poor conditions couldn't slow down the Gators, who ran away with their second straight PAC title. It's a stark contrast to the last two conference championships; last year's was decided by only three strokes, and only one tally separated the top two teams in 2022-23. Allegheny's four-day total of 1,185 was 33 strokes better than second-place W&J, the largest margin of victory in a PAC tournament since the Gators rejoined the conference.

Hassenplug's run as one of the best to ever play in the PAC added another milestone with his third individual medalist honor. His 2-over 72 was the best fourth-round score, and he finished even at 284 for the entire tournament. Hassenplug is only the second men's golfer in PAC history to win medalist and MVP honors in three consecutive seasons, joining W&J's Mike Revak, who captured four in a row from 1995-98. The AC senior also tied Nathan Smith '01 for the most individual conference titles in program history with three.

Although the rest of the field wasn't particularly close to Hassenplug, fellow Allegheny senior Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) held his spot in second place on Saturday. Melzar concluded the spring meet with an 8-over 78, resulting in a cumulative 297 (+13). Now a four-time all-conference recipient, he earned his first All-PAC First Team award with the best finish of his career at a conference championship.

Allegheny's entire quintet ended the spring championships in a position to receive All-PAC laurels. In seventh and eighth place, Connor Bell (Montrose, Colo./Montrose) and Nadir Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School) were both included on the All-PAC Second Team. Dylan Kochis (Saint Augustine, Fla. B./Reed Henderson (Pa.)) was one of four golfers in a tie for 12th place, good enough for an All-PAC Honorable Mention. Head coach Jeff Groff repeated as the PAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year after guiding the Gators to another victory.

Khan was also chosen as Allegheny's representative on the PAC Sportsmanship Team. The PAC Sportsmanship Teams were established to recognize student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior, and are an ongoing effort to recognize and encourage positive sportsmanship among all PAC teams and student-athletes.
