PAC Release
TRAFFORD, Pa. -- After a strong showing in Florida during spring break, the Allegheny College men's tennis team swept this week's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) awards, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Junior
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) was chosen for PAC Player of the Week honors. Freshman
Kristian Janci (Kysucké Nové Mesto, Slovakia/The British International School Shanghai) was named the Newcomer of the Week.
Rodriguez posted an 8-1 overall record on the team's spring break trip in the Sunshine State. He was undefeated in four singles matches and went 4-1 in doubles competition. Against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Adrian College, Rodriguez was slotted third in the singles lineup, winning both in straight sets. While playing in the No. 4 spot, he outlasted Penn Morrison of Division II Cedarville University, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3). Rodriguez played all five doubles matches at No. 2, with his only loss coming against No. 16-ranked Kenyon College.
Janci went 9-1 last week, highlighted by a perfect 5-0 record as part of Allegheny's top doubles tandem. Not only did he and
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) take down the No. 1 team from Division II Cedarville, but they also beat the sixth-ranked duo in the Central Region, Kenyon's Paulo Pocasangre and Alejandro Gonzalez, by a score of 7-6 (4). Of his four singles victories, Janci earned three from the No. 1 spot, including a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win over Rose-Hulman's Joao Henrique Nossar. The only blemish on Janci's record was a 6-4, 6-2 loss against nationally-ranked Kenyon.
Rodriguez, Janci, and the rest of the Allegheny men's tennis team will travel to the University of Rochester on Saturday, March 22, for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference match.
