LATROBE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's swimming team traveled to the campus of Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, for a dual meet with the Bearcats on Saturday afternoon.
The shorthanded Gators (1-4) competed in five events against the host Bearcats (2-2), who earned a 194-26 victory in their home waters at the Frank and Elizabeth Resnick Pool.
Second-year standout
Sam Kohler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) placed in the top two in all three of his races. His best performance came in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Kohler beat two Bearcats with a time of 10:51.85, the best of his collegiate career in the distance event. He shaved more than 11 seconds off his best time from last season.
Kohler suffered a nail-biting defeat in the 100-yard breaststroke. He was clocked at 1:04.89, a mere .35 seconds shy of Saint Vincent's Joe Borneman (1:04.64). Kohler also finished as the runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.76).
Christian Habusta (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and
Oscar Zúñiga (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino Marista) both participated in the freestyle springs. Habusta led the way for Allegheny in both races, placing third in the 50-yard free (23.91 seconds) and fourth in the 100-yard free (56.42 seconds).
