MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's golf team put together one of the best performances in recent memory at its home tournament to win the annual Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational at the Country Club of Meadville.
Allegheny's top quintet finished under par in both rounds and won by 30 strokes over the Gator "B" team. After firing an opening round 286 (-2), the Gators were even better on Monday with a 6-under 282 for a two-day total of 568. Sunday's score is the best by the Gators at the Country Club of Meadville since the 2005 edition of the Kuhn Invitational, while the second-round score is the best in more than 20 years.
In second place, the "B" team scored rounds of 302 (+14) and 296 (+8), and its 598 (+22) was one stroke better than the third-place Titans from Westminster College.
Seven Gators finished among the top 10, including the medalist and runner-up.
Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) was even in the opening round with a 72 but turned in the best round of the tournament on Monday with a 5-under 67. He birdied four consecutive holes, the fourth through seventh, and ended with seven total birdies in the second round.
Fellow senior
Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) was the only other golfer with a cumulative score below par at 141 (-3). Like Melzar, he carded an even 72 in the first round but found success on the front nine Monday. Hassenplug was par or better on all but one hole on Monday.
Connor Bell (Montrose, Colo./Montrose),
Nadir Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School), and
Dylan Kochis (Saint Augustine, Fla./B. Reed Henderson (Pa.)) were among the five players tied for fourth place with a 147 (+3). Tied for ninth,
