Women's Tennis Beats Defending PAC Champion Grove City

Box Score GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's tennis team earned a crucial Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over the defending PAC champions from Grove City College on Friday by a 6-1 final score.

Last season, Allegheny (7-1, 4-0 PAC) beat Grove City (2-1, 1-1 PAC) in the regular season but were upset by the second-seeded Wolverines in the PAC Championship Tournament finals. Friday's win will once again put the Gators in the driver's seat to earn the top seed and hosting rights for this year's tournament.

Playing on their home courts, the Wolverines took an early lead by securing the doubles point. Grove City won the second and third matches, with Allegheny's lone doubles win coming from Julia Müsseler (Munich, Germany/Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium) and Evie Ellenberger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) in the No. 1 spot, 6-3.

Despite giving up the doubles point, the Gators bounced back and came out on top in all six singles matches. Five of the matches resulted in straight-set victories. The lone exception was Müsseler's No. 2 match against Anna Poranski. Although she lost the first set, 6-2, the first-year standout from Germany won the second set, 7-5, and prevailed in the tiebreaker, 10-8.

Sophomore Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine/Optima) only lost two games in her No. 1 singles victory over Peyton Joines. Nicole Serna Cassan (Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico/Grandview Preparatory (Fla.)) extended her undefeated streak, improving to 8-0 in singles action with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 4 spot.
