HENDERSON, Nev. -- Allegheny College opened the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships with 18 holes at The Legacy Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada, on Tuesday afternoon.
After one round of action in the Las Vegas suburbs, the Gators are tied for 30th on the team leaderboard with a 13-over par 301 alongside Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Allegheny is seven strokes back of the two teams tied for 18th place, an important mark to track heading into Wednesday's round. The top 18 teams and the top six individuals from the non-advancing teams will make the cut following the second round.
On Wednesday, Allegheny will relocate to the Boulder Creek Golf Club in nearby Boulder City, Nevada, the second host site for the opening rounds. The Gators should look forward to better scores tomorrow; seven of the top 10 teams from Tuesday played their first round at Boulder Creek.
Allegheny teed off on the back nine at noon under a scorching 90-degree desert sun. But after finding their groove, the Gators collectively improved on the front half of the course at The Legacy.
Two-time Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion
Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) leads the way with an even 72 and a team-high five birdies. He began with a birdie on the par-3 10th and finished the round with another on the par-5 ninth. Hassenplug is tied for 46th place.
Just two strokes behind Hassenplug is
Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional), who fired a 74 (+2). Melzar was incredibly consistent across all 18 holes, and his team-leading 14 pars are just two shy of the most in the entire 221-man field. Similarly,
Bergas Anargya (Jakarta, Indonesia/Binus School Simprug) parred 13 holes, including a run of 10 in a row. Like Melzar, Anargya parred all but one hole on the front nine.
Faaris Cheema (Dubai, UAE/Kings School Al Barsha) was 3-over on both halves of the course and sits just one stroke behind Anargya with a 6-over 78.
Nadir Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School) rebounded from a tough start and settled in nicely down the stretch. After going 5-over on his first five holes, Khan ended the round only 3-over across the last 13 holes and was second on the team with three birdies.
