Layer Announces Four Additions to Football Coaching Staff

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College football team, under the leadership of head coach Braden Layer, is pleased to announce the addition of four assistant coaches for the upcoming 2024 season.

On the offensive side of the ball, Allegheny has added Devin Williams as a running backs coach, while former McDowell High School head coach, Brad "Bo" Orlando, will work with the tight ends. Defensively, Aaron Alvarez and Clay Denstorff will coach defensive backs and outside linebackers, respectively.

Williams returns east after spending the 2023 season as the running backs coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The nationally-ranked Bulldogs, members of the Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), finished the season with the sixth-best rushing offense in the nation, averaging more than 243 yards per game. Minnesota Duluth went 9-2 overall and ended the 2023 campaign as the No. 25-ranked team in both the D2football.com and American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) polls. At Alfred State College in 2022, Williams coached an all-region tailback and all-conference fullback. Williams, a native of Fairport, New York, graduated from St. John Fisher University with a degree in criminology in 2020.

A local addition, Orlando joins the Gators as a volunteer assistant after a decorated tenure as the head varsity coach at McDowell in Millcreek Township. During his 10 years at the helm, the Trojans won 81 games and nine District 10 championships. In his final season, Orlando led McDowell to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) 6A quarterfinals and mentored six District 10 all-stars, including All-American offensive lineman and Penn State commit, Cooper Cousins. Previously an assistant coach at Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie, Orlando was the offensive coordinator for the Ramblers' 2012 state championship team. A multi-sport student-athlete, Orlando played baseball and football at Penn State before graduating in 2000.

After a season as a graduate assistant and safeties coach at Division II Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, Alvarez will oversee Allegheny's defensive backs. In his one year with the Cavaliers, the defense increased its interception total by 33% and recorded 18 total takeaways while allowing nearly six less points per game. He also assisted with game-planning, organizing scout teams on offense and special teams, and worked with the recruiting coordinator to cover parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. A 2023 graduate of Marietta College, Alvarez was a four-year member of the football team but was limited due to injury.

Denstorff was one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) over the past three years. He was a two-year captain and three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) selection at Denison University. In 31 career games, he racked up 131 tackles, 27.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, and three interceptions. The Perrysburg, Ohio, native graduated second all-time in program history in sacks and tackles for loss (47). In 2022, he was included on the All-NCAC First Team and D3football.com All-Region Second Team. As a senior, he led the NCAC with 15.5 tackles for a loss and tied for first in the conference with 10 sacks. Denstorff received his bachelor's degree in communications in December.
