GAMBIER, Ohio -- One week after hosting its own tournament, the Allegheny College women's tennis team traveled to Gambier, Ohio, to participate in the Kenyon College Invitational.

Competition at Kenyon was much stiffer than the season-opening Allegheny Invitational, as the Gators faced opposition from teams such as Case Western Reserve University, Denison University, and the host Owls, all of which finished the 2022-23 campaign ranked among the top five teams in the Central Region.

On Saturday, several Gators played singles matches that required a tiebreak. First-year Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine/Optima) won her first set against Anna Kan from CWRU, which was ranked No. 18 in the final national poll from 2022-23, but dropped a close tiebreak set, 10-7. Maria Lounder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) and Taryn Simmers of Otterbein University traded 6-3 sets before the second-year Gator clinched the win, 10-6.

Rei Etsumi (Honolulu, Hawaii/President William McKinley) and Omega Ba (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater) also beat an Otterbein Cardinal in three, as Etsumi defeated Julia Gillin, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9, and Ba won over Caitlyn Pennington, 6-4, 1-6, 10-4.

In doubles action, Sabrina Rodriguez (Kissimmee, Fla./Professional and Technical) and Allison Riley (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) took down Pennington and teammate Rachelle Moses, 8-3. Grydnieva and Etsumi picked up a victory over Abby Williams and Margaret Steward from the College of Wooster, 8-4. 

Jean-Arlette Legrand (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville School) and Lounder teamed up for two doubles wins, an 8-5 defeat of Wooster's Abby Aitken and Lauren Richmond, plus an 8-0 sweep in an exhibition match against the tandem of Amelia Bronfman from Oberlin College and Karenna Sivanesan of CWRU.
