PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- For the first time in a decade, Allegheny College men's track and field has an All-American.
Jacob Boord (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) concluded a record-setting junior season by placing fourth in the javelin at the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships, held in Pittsford, New York, on the campus of St. John Fisher University on a breezy Thursday afternoon.
A two-time national qualifier, Boord climbed eight spots on the leaderboard after finishing in 12th place as a sophomore in the spring of 2022. He's the first Gator to secure All-America accolades since Bobby Over did so in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 2013. Boord is the fourth Allegheny student-athlete to collect All-America honors in the javelin, joining Vince Werner (2006), Pat Madigan (1997, 1998), and Warren Phillips (1995, 1997).Â

Seeded sixth in the country entering the meet, Boord competed in the second flight. His first throw of the afternoon was his best, as he reached 63.91 meters on his initial attempt. That mark was good enough for second place through the preliminary rounds. Boord's fourth throw (62.44 meters) and his sixth and final try (62.96 meters) also would have qualified for him for an All-America award.
No. 1-seeded Will Lawrence from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville won the 2023 national championship with a Division III season-long throw of 72.14 meters.
The Gators have one more national qualifier in Mihaela Toader (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). Toader is scheduled to run the 400-meter dash prelims on Friday, May 26, at 5:45 p.m. at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex.
