MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's swimming and diving team returned from its extended winter break to host Westminster College in a narrow 144-134 loss at the Mellon Pool on Friday night.

The Gators' (1-5) first action in nearly two months was the closest dual meet of the 2022-23 season. Furthermore, if the points from Westminster's (3-1) one- and three-meter dives were taken out of the equation, Allegheny would have won the swim portion of the match, 134-126.

Allegheny swimmers were victorious in 10 of the 14 events, which included a pair of relay wins in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle.

Seniors Ariana Clark (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) and Maggie Baham (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) were first in every event in which they competed. Both were on the 200-yard medley relay squad, which kicked off Friday's meet with a six-plus second victory over Westminster's top team.

Clark and Westminster's Christina Loewe, a former Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Newcomer of the Year, found themselves battling for first place in a pair of ultra-competitive races. Clark won the 100-yard backstroke by a mere 12 hundredths of a second (1:02.81 to 1:02.93). Her win over Loewe in the 200-yard backstroke was even closer, as the pair were separated by nine hundredths of a second (2:17.57 to 2:17.66).
