MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Although the Allegheny College women's swimming and diving team earned wins in eight of the 14 events against Saint Vincent College on Friday night, the Bearcats pulled out a 140-117 victory over the Gators at the Mellon Pool.
Allegheny (1-2, 1-2 PAC) won four consecutive events - the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly, and the 50- and 100-yard freestyle - to jump out to a 79-69 lead through the first eight races of the night. However, the Bearcats (3-0, 2-0 PAC) regained the lead for good during the 200-yard backstroke. Three Saint Vincent swimmers earned points in the event, as the 15-3 advantage put the Bearcats ahead by two, 84-82.Â
Down by only four, 104-100, the Gators were once again outscored in the 100-yard butterfly by a 14-3 margin, which put the dual meet out of Allegheny's reach.
The reigning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Rookie of the Week,
Josephine Reiter (Pittsburgh, Pa./CAPA), and junior
Olivia Kraus (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led Allegheny with a pair of individual first-place finishes, in addition to swimming in the first-place 200-yard medley relay.
