GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny College men's tennis team fell to No. 31 Denison University, 5-0, this morning to open up the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament quarterfinal round.
Allegheny (7-14, 2-2 NCAC East) fell into an early 3-0 hole after the doubles portion was completed and dropped two singles matches to allow nationally-ranked Denison (12-6, 2-1 NCAC West) to advance into the NCAC Semifinals.
Thomas Manning and
Jai Redkar were on the wrong end of a back-and-forth battle in top-flight doubles as they fell to Kevin Brown and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean, 9-8 (7-5).
Tyler Triolo and
Zach Anderson also fell in a hard-fought second-flight match, dropping an 8-6 decision to Blake Burstein and John Armstrong. The Big Red finished off their sweep of doubles with an 8-4 win over
Samarth Gopal and
Andreas Landgrebe in the third flight.
In fourth-flight singles, Gopal fell to Owen Smith by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to give Denison a 4-0 edge in the match. An identical 6-2, 6-2 result for Costas Alevizopoulos over
Colton JohnsonTaylor in the sixth flight was enough to advance the tournament host.
Allegheny completes its season tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. against Wabash College in the fifth-place match. The Gators defeated the Little Giants, 5-3, last season in this same spot behind a pair of victories from Manning along with wins from Redkar, Triolo, and Gopal.
