STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team collected its third consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win by a 7-0 final score on Tuesday, this time beating Franciscan University in Steubenville in shutout fashion.
The Gators (10-7, 3-0 PAC), winners of five in a row, preserved their undefeated conference record with another impressive win. Franciscan (2-12, 0-3 PAC), however, presented Allegheny with its toughest opponent yet, as the Barons won eight games in doubles and 12 in singles despite losing all nine matches.
Sophomores
Levente Mihaly (Békéscsaba, Hungary/Békéscsabai SZC Széchenyi István) and
Olivier Erkens (Gouda, Netherlands/Coornhert Gymnasium) edged Franciscan's top duo of Aaron Heinlein and Christopher Yvars, 6-4. Mihaly then faced Yvars one-on-one in the No. 2 singles match and prevailed in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Erkens was one of three Gators in the bottom half of the lineup to defeat his singles opponent with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 score.
Freshman
Adam Memije (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway), who was a 6-2 winner with
Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) in the No. 2 doubles contest, faced Heinlein in the No. 1 singles bout. Memije dropped only four games to the former PAC Newcomer of the Year and two-time All-PAC First Team singles honoree, as the Gator rookie beat Heinlein, 6-2, 6-2.
