MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team had to battle opponents from six regional schools and Mother Nature to kick off the fall half of the 2026-27 season at the Robertson Athletic Complex over the weekend.
Saturday's portion of the Allegheny Invitational was called off due to forecasted thunderstorms throughout the afternoon and evening. Although Sunday's schedule began without a hitch, another brief storm rolled through the area around 4 p.m., forcing action to end early.
In total, the Gators played seven doubles matches and 16 singles matches. Allegheny was 5-2 in doubles and finished with an even .500 record in singles competition.
The freshman duo of
Jacobo Montoya (Medellín, Columbia/Vermont School Medellín) and
Martin Herfray (Karlsruhe, Germany/Fichte-Gymnasium Karlsruhe) shined in their debut with the Gators. Montoya and Herfray shut out Baldwin Wallace University's Andrej Devic and Nathan Meier, 6-0. Junior
Paxton Garland-Sutter (Rochester, Ill./Rochester) and sophomore transfer
Steven Fitzsimmons (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) were nearly perfect with a 6-1 win against Washington and Jefferson College's Steven Duing and Jacob Bennett.
Montoya, Herfray, Garland-Sutter, and Fitzsimmons were also among the eight players to earn a singles victory on Sunday. After their doubles contest, Fitzsimmons beat Bennett head-to-head, 6-4, 6-2. Garland-Sutter bounced back from a first-set loss to Baldwin Wallace University's Sevie Kretchmar en route to a super tiebreaker win, 4-6, 6-1, 10-5.
Fellow rookie
Logan Memije (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) faced two Division II players from Tiffin University in the first two collegiate matches of his career. He battled to a tiebreaker in the first set and a super tiebreaker against Tiffin's Luka Gilbert in a close loss. He then received a win over Tom Van Nooten, who retired after losing the first set to Memije, 6-2.
