MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College and Case Western Reserve University played two rounds of tennis at the Blue and Gold Invite, hosted by the Gators at the Robertson Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Case Western Reserve, a perennial championship contender and a national semifinalist last season, provided a tough opponent for the Gators to challenge themselves against in their last competition of the fall. Allegheny earned four wins against the Spartans, two in singles and two in doubles.
Levente Mihaly (Békéscsaba, Hungary/Békéscsabai SZC Széchenyi István) finished the day with a 2-2 overall record. He and
Olivier Erkens (Gouda, Netherlands/Coornhert Gymnasium) split their doubles matches, highlighted by a 7-5 win over the CWRU duo of David Bell and Daniel Zhang. They also dropped a close 6-4 decision to Shay Gupta and Glen Ngo. In singles, Levente defeated Nikhil Ramani in a super tiebreaker, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.
Allegheny's other singles win also came in a 10-point tiebreaker. Freshman
Luis Espla (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) rebounded from a second-set shutout to beat Zhang 6-4, 0-6, 11-9.
