MEADVILLE, Pa. – Facing their second nationally-ranked competitor in as many days, the Allegheny men's tennis team battled but came up short, dropping a 7-2 decision to #31 Denison to close out the 2015-16 regular season.
The Gators secured their first win of the afternoon at the number-two doubles position, as the tandem of
Zach Anderson and
Tyler Triolo picked up a tight 8-6 decision over the Big Red duo of John Armstrong and Blake Burstein. It marked the ninth doubles win of the season for the Triolo/Anderson pairing, while it was the 81st career doubles win for Triolo, as he added on to his school record in the category.
In top flight doubles, the Gators duo of
Thomas Manning and
Jai Redkar were edged 8-4 by Kevin Brown and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean, the fifth-ranked doubles pairing in the Central Region, while the senior tandem of
Samarth Gopal and Andres Landgrebe fell 8-3 in the third flight.
In a matchup of two regionally ranked singles competitors, the 21st-ranked Manning atoned for his doubles defeat with a 6-2, 6-4 win over #15 Brown at the number-one flight. Manning, who closed the regular season with an 18-9 singles mark, now has 73 career singles wins, tying 1996 grad Ryan Barclay for third all-time in program history.
Allegheny closes the regular season with a 7-13 overall record, while Denison, also ranked ninth in the ITA Central Region, improves to 11-6. The Gators will now prep for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, scheduled for Apr. 29 – May 1 at Denison. Seeded sixth in the tourney, Allegheny will again face the Big Red to open up on Friday at 11 a.m.
