Football Game Notes - Week Nine: Allegheny at Denison

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny football team will close out its road portion of the 2014 schedule this Saturday, as the Gators travel to North Coast Athletic Conference rival Denison University for a 1 p.m. battle.

Allegheny (1-7, 1-6 NCAC) will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak, most recently falling 35-24 at Kenyon in week eight.  In a game that featured two ties and four lead changes, the Lords scored touchdowns in the final two minutes of both the third and fourth quarters to come back from a 24-21 Allegheny lead.  Denison is coming off of a 34-7 win over Oberlin in week eight, with the Big Red scoring all 34 of their points over the second and third quarters.  Denison out-gained the Yeomen 428-170 in total offense, and limited Oberlin to just 70 passing yards and an interception.

The Gators and Big Red are frequent foes on the gridiron, as this Saturday's contest marks the 28th all-time meeting between the two squads, dating back to 1985.  Allegheny leads 22-5 in the series, and will look to bounce back from last season's 24-21 Senior Day defeat to the Big Red in a game that saw a furious second half comeback fall short by the Gators at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

DEICHLER JOINS THE CENTURY CLUB
In last week's 35-24 loss at Kenyon, Allegheny junior tailback Nick Deichler (Berlin Heights, Ohio/Firelands) ran 15 times for 143 yards and a touchdown.  It was the first 100-yard performance for a Gator running back since Tim Werley ran for 130 yards in the 2012 season finale at Hiram, while the 143 yards are the most in a single game for an Allegheny player since Mario Tarquinio ran for 160 yards on Oct. 14, 2006, also against Kenyon.  Deichler's touchdown last week was his sixth of the season, which ranks fifth in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

MURGO THE MACHINE
Freshman middle linebacker Nick Murgo (Warren, R.I./Hope) tallied 15 tackles for the second straight game in last week's Kenyon contest, and currently ranks second in the NCAC with 91 tackles on the season.  With two games left on the season, Murgo has already totaled the third most tackles in a single season for the Gators since 2005, and is on pace to be the first Allegheny player to surpass 100 stops since Andy Schliehauf made 117 tackles in 2009. Murgo has made 11 or more tackles in seven of the Gators' eight games this season.

PUNTING PROWESS
The Gators enter week nine ranked third in the North Coast Athletic Conference in net punt average, at 33.8 yards.  Junior Chris Bourne (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and sophomore Tim Witenske (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) have combined to average 35.0 yards per kick, while the Gator punt coverage has surrendered an average of just 0.9 yards on 47 opponent punt returns.

WEALTHY RETURNS
After returning four kickoffs in last week's game at Kenyon, Allegheny junior Tyler Smith  (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) is now tied for first in program history with 20 kickoff returns on the season, joining Kyle Geiser, who also returned 20 in 2005.  Smith has totaled 381 yards on kick returns this season, good for third most in team history.  His average of 19.1 yards per return this season currently ranks fourth in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

UP NEXT
This week marks the Gators' final road contest of the 2014 season.  The team will close out the year next Saturday, Nov. 15th, hosting Wittenberg in a 1 p.m. Senior Day contest at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
