Football Game Notes - Week Seven: Allegheny vs. DePauw

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Allegheny will look to snap a four-game losing skid this Saturday, when the Gators play host to North Coast Athletic Conference foe DePauw University at 1 p.m. at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

Both squads come into the week on the heels of a week six loss, as the Gators dropped a 37-9 Homecoming contest to Oberlin, while the Tigers were edged 23-16 by Ohio Wesleyan.  This marks just the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools, with the Gators winning two of the past three matchups.  Allegheny topped the Tigers at home in both 2011 and 2012, by scores of 17-10 and 22-20, respectively, before DePauw topped Allegheny 23-7 in week eight last season in Greencastle, Indiana.

This week's game is the penultimate home contest on the Gators' 2014 schedule, as they will take to the road to face Kenyon (Nov. 1) and Denison (Nov. 8), before closing out the 2014 regular season with a Nov. 15 home contest against Wittenberg.

MURGO CLIMBS NCAC RANKS
In last Saturday's Homecoming matchup vs. Oberlin, Allegheny freshman middle linebacker Nick Murgo  finished with a game-high 12 tackles (8 solo, 4 assists), including one behind the line of scrimmage for a three-yard loss.  Through his first six career games, the rookie ranks third in the North Coast Athletic Conference with 65 tackles, good for an average of 10.8 per game.  Murgo has led the Gators in tackles in five of their six games this season, recording 11 or more four times, highlighted by a 15-tackle effort in week six at Wooster.

HE'S BACK
After missing the first four games of the 2014 season due to injury, senior receiver/return man Derrick Emigh  has eased his way back into the lineup, capped off with a solid effort last week against Oberlin.  He made five catches for 26 yards in his first two appearances (vs. Ohio Wesleyan, at Wooster), before hauling in two grabs for 28 yards last week against Oberlin.  He also provided one of the Gators' most explosive plays of the day, as in the third quarter, he fielded a missed field goal attempt nine yards deep in the end zone, and returned it nearly 50 yards to the Allegheny 40.  Emigh was named All-NCAC in 2012, when he averaged a conference-leading 10.8 yards per punt return.

DEICHLER FINDS PAYDIRT
In last week's matchup vs. Oberlin, Allegheny junior running back Nick Deichler scored the first points of the game with a four-yard touchdown plunge in the second quarter.  It marked his fifth rushing score of the season, which is tied for the third most in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  The five rushing touchdowns are the most for a Gator in a single-season since Rodney Still also ran for five in 2007.  With four games left, Deichler is in striking distance of catching Mario Tarquinio's total of nine rushing scores in 2006.

NO PASSING
The Gators enter this week ranked in the top half of the NCAC in pass defense, as they surrender an average of 222 yards per game through the air, fifth lowest in the conference.  Allegheny's six interceptions are third most in the conference, led by senior Ron Borne (Coraopolis, Pa./Cornell), who has three, and freshman Travis Thomas (New Port Richey, Fla./Gulf), with two, as they rank second and third in the conference, respectively.

INFREQUENT FOE
This week marks just the fourth all-time meeting between Depauw and Allegheny, as the Tigers joined the North Coast Athletic Conference prior to the 2011 campaign.  The Gators are 2-1 all-time against DePauw, with both wins coming in the friendly confines of Frank B. Fuhrer Field.  In their last meeting in Meadville, a 22-20 Allegheny win on Oct. 13, 2012, the game was clinched when the Gators' Colin Hartford broke up a pass on a two-point conversion try after DePauw scored with 35 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.  The home team has won all three prior meetings, as the Gators topped DePauw 17-10 in Meadville in 2011, while the Gators fell 23-7 in Indiana last season.
