Football Game Notes - Week Six: Gators Host Yeomen on Homecoming

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny football team will welcome North Coast Athletic Conference rival Oberlin to Frank B. Fuhrer Field for a 2 p.m. Homecoming contest this Saturday, October,18th.

Both the Gators and Yeomen enter the game riding three-game losing streaks.  Allegheny, which holds a 26-20 all-time record in its series with Oberlin, looks to bounce back after falling 42-21 at Wooster last week. The Gators trailed just 21-14 midway through the third quarter, before the Fighting Scots erupted for three touchdowns in an eight-minute span to pull away for the win.

The game marks the first of two consecutive home games for the Gators, who will play host to DePauw in a week seven matchup on Oct. 25 at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

KEEPING THE LAUNDRY OFF THE FIELD

Saturday's contest will see the Gators face the league's least-penalized team, as Oberlin arrives in Meadville with only 35.2 yards of penalties per contest.  In comparison, Allegheny ranks seventh with 60.8 penalty yards a game, most of which have come during the squad's last two games, surrendering 97 yards on 10 penalties against Ohio Wesleyan before nine flags for 79 total yards against Wooster.

NIGRO PRIMED FOR STRONG HOMECOMING
After contests in which he throws for 200 or fewer yards this season, sophomore quarterback Jon Nigro has returned to immensely impressive success, averaging 295.5 yards of passing offense against Hiram (Sept. 20) and Ohio Wesleyan (Oct. 4).  Nigro has thrown touchdowns in each of his last two contests, hitting targets for receptions of 50 or more yards in three of the Gators' five contests, and threw for 151 yards on 17 completions against Wooster, tacking on a touchdown, last Saturday.

RUNNING BACK TANDEM CONTINUES TO FIND PAYDIRT
Throughout the first five games of the 2014 campaign, the Gators have scored seven rushing touchdowns compared to three through the air, led by the running back contingent in junior Nick Deichler and freshman Jake Wilson.  Deichler has been the Gators' most productive offensive threat, finding the end zone four times while piling up 241 net yards of offense. In addition, Wilson has rushed for 200 net yards, averaging 4.7 yards per carry.  Last season, the Gators averaged 91.0 yards per game, but the ground attack of Wilson and Deichler, who combined average 88.2 yards per game on the ground, has helped the Gators to a rushing average of 104.4 per game in 2014.

GROUND VS. AIR ATTACK ON DISPLAY SATURDAY
Two conflicting offenses will faceoff on Saturday as Allegheny, who has totaled 1,096 yards through the air this season will face off against a more balanced Oberlin offense that has totaled 763 yards of rushing offense to compliment 741 passing yards.  The Oberlin turnover game will also be a key component on Saturday, as the Yeomen have only lost one fumble on the season, compared to six fumbles forced by the Oberlin defense.

GATORS LOOK FOR OFFENSIVE MOMENTUM:
In their four losses this season, the Yeomen have surrendered 475 yards per contest while being outscored, 210-44.  Oberlin allowed a season-high 579 yards against DePauw Tigers last week, as the Tigers struck early and often, converting 5-of-6 first half drives into touchdowns. In their last home contest against the Battling Bishops, the Gators established first half momentum by scoring on four of their six first half drives, producing two touchdowns and a pair of field goals.

HOMECOMING HISTORY:
Allegheny holds a 6-4 advantage in homecoming contests over the last 10 years, although the Gators hope to avoid a two-game homecoming skid against a familiar foe on Saturday.  Allegheny last won on homecoming against the Yeomen, 15-3, on Sept. 29, 2012.  Prior to the Gators' 2012 triumph over Oberlin, Allegheny picked up a 41-21 win over Ohio Wesleyan on Oct. 23, 2010.
