BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the third straight season, Allegheny senior
Bobby Over was crowned NCAA Mideast Regional Runner of the Year, finishing first in a field of 365 runners to lead the Gators to a fourth-place finish as a team.
Over won his third consecutive Mideast Regional individual title by covering the 8K course at Lehigh University in a time of 24:29, edging second-place finisher Chris Stadler of Haverford by less than one second. It was Over's third straight individual win of the year, and should establish the 2012 NCAA Division III national runner-up as a solid favorite at the 2013 NCAA Championships, held next Saturday in Hanover, Ind.
The senior standout was one of two Gators to earn All-Region laurels, as Steiner earned the honor for the second straight season by taking 12th in a time of 25:05. In an extremely tight field in arguably the strongest region in the country, the third through 18th finishers were separated by just 29 seconds, while the top 30 runners all finished within one minute of one another.
On the team scoreboard, Johns Hopkins, ranked eighth in the US Track & Field and Cross Country Association national poll, too first, with its top five runners all finishing in the top 20 to post a team score of 62. Dickinson, ranked 13th, took second, finishing with 88 points, while #15 Haverford took third with a score of 106. The Gators, ranked 31st in the most recent national poll, finished with a team score of 145.
Following Steiner, junior
Alex Simon took 37th, timed in 25:48, while classmate
James Rynes took 46th (25:56), and senior
Jack Denison 49th (26:00).Â
Allegheny, which finished fifth at last year's regional championship, will now await word upon receiving a team berth in the NCAA Division III National Championship for a ninth straight season, with the field announced on Sunday evening.Â
