Box Score DELAWARE, Ohio - The Gators recorded their highest shot total in over a decade, and extended their shutout streak to five games, with a 5-0 win at North Coast Athletic Conference rival Ohio Wesleyan.Â
Eight different players recorded at least one point, while the Gators (8-4-2, 4-0 NCAC) out-shot the Battling Bishops (3-10, 0-4 NCAC) 40-8, the most shots in a game for Allegheny since Oct. 17, 2001.
The play was wide open in the early stages of the first half, with both teams receiving plenty of scoring chances in the opening minutes. In the ninth minute, the host Bishops looked as if they were primed to take an early lead, posting four shots in a 40-second span. Gator keeper
Gabby Curtis made a sprawling save, punching the ball over the cross bar, and off of the ensuing corner, OWU had a pair of looks up close, but they were both blocked on the doorstep by the Gator defense to keep the game scoreless.
The play would then swing in favor of Allegheny, as it owned possession over the next several minutes. In a 10-minute span, the Gators tallied 10 shots and two corner kicks, and finally took the lead in the game's 27th minute.Â
Niki Augustine blasted a hard shot that was blocked by a defender. The rebound came right to the foot of
Alison Buzzard just outside of the box, and she knocked it home for her fourth goal of the year.
Momentum would stay with the Gators, as they posted seven more shots over the next 10 minutes before adding an insurance goal just before halftime, when
Jessie Thiessen scored her team-leading fifth of the year, off of assists from
Hannah Zangara and
Greta Hilbrands, with 2:20 until the intermission.
Allegheny continued to control play to open the second half, scoring its third goal of the day off of a corner kick in the 56th minutes.Â
Sarah Shindler sent a high, arching attempt deep into the goal box, finding the head of a leaping
Liana Leja, who directed it into the back of the net for her first career goal.Â
Just five minutes later, Leja struck again.Â
Jessie Thiessen made a run down the middle of the field, with Leja streaking alongside. As they entered the goal box, Thiessen drew the keeper out of the net and then sent a short cross to Leja, who one touched it home to make the score 4-0 with 34 minutes left in regulation.
The Gators closed out the day's scoring with 1:43 left in regulation.Â
Tori Delzer rang a shot off the cross bar, with the rebound coming to
Kayla Dantona.  Dantona sent it on goal, deflecting off the keeper and back to the foot of Delzer, who put it away for her first goal of the season.
With the Gator offense putting together its best showing of the 2013 campaign, the defense continued its strong performance, as Curtis made three saves to earn the shutout victory in goal. It marked the fifth straight shutout win for Allegheny, which hasn't allowed a goal in 513 minutes. The Gators have outscored their opponents 14-0 over the past five games, including a 13-0 margin in four conference matches.Â
For Ohio Wesleyan, Hannah Zacharias was tested early and often in goal, and finished with 19 saves.
The Gators are scheduled to return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 23rd, when they host NCAC foe Hiram at 4 p.m. at The Robertson Athletic Complex.Â
