WINNECONE, Wis. –
Junior Bobby Over finished 17th overall to lead Allegheny to a 24th-place team finish at the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships. Over's finish, which comes on the heels of his announcement as Mideast Region Runner of the Year, marks the fourth consecutive year that Allegheny has produced at least one cross country All-American.

Over stayed among the leaders for the duration of Saturday's championship. After coming through the first mile in 4:43, a second straight sub-five minute mile put Over at 10th in the individual standings. He fell to 16th heading into the final mile of the race, but pieced together a 4:53 split in the stretch leg to finish with a time of 24:35.77 – the fastest 8k time ever by an Allegheny runner at the NCAA Championships.

Pat McLaughlin served as Allegheny's second finisher, although he was unable to move much from his first-mile position. McLaughlin was steady throughout the race en route to a time of 25:09.73 and an 82nd-place finish.

Junior Kevin Edwards closed third for the Gators. He started near the back as the race showcased a blistering start, but slowly improved his position. Bringing it home with a final mile of 5:02, Edwards finished with a time of 25:26.84.

The Gators were hoping for more out of their No.4 and 5 runners if they were to flirt with a top-10 national finish. Junior Mike Vlah got out fast and finished strong, but was isolated during the middle miles. He finished with a time of 25:47.33.

“We wanted to build on last week's great race, and really thought we had a chance to improve our position from last year,” said head coach Brent Wilkerson. “While it wasn't the way we were hoping to end the season, we're already so excited for next season. We have a great group coming back, and this was a highly valuable experience that we should be able to use to our advantage next fall.”

Freshman Alex Simon (26:46.60), sophomore John Denison (26:49.86) and rookie James Rynes (26:53.01) closed out Allegheny's contingent.

After finishing second overall last season, North Central captured its second team title in three years and its 14th national championship overall. Haverford, which won NCAAs last season and took first place at last week's Mideast Regional, finished second.

Serving as the first Allegheny harrier to compete at the NCAA Championships in five years, sophomore Kristina Martin capped an outstanding second season by finishing 176th in the women's championship race (22:47.11). She came through the first mile in 5:50 and stayed fairly level throughout the 6k circuit. Washington University (Mo.) topped defending champions Middlebury for its first NCAA cross country team title.
