OBERLIN, Ohio – T. J. Salopek threw for a career-high 357 yards and two touchdowns to help Allegheny blank Oberlin 22-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opener for both teams on Saturday.
Salopek completed 33 of 39 passes to lead the Gators (3-0, 1-0 NCAC) to a season-best 535 yards of offense and remain undefeated on the season. His performance ranks second all-time for most pass completions in a single game, just six shy of breaking the program record set by Jimmy Savage on Oct. 7, 2006 against Wabash (38).
Out of the nine targets Salopek connected with on the afternoon, Eric Mastrogiacomo and Terry Hartford recorded 76 yards in the air apiece. Matt Griffith and Hartford caught the two touchdown passes from 22 and 34 yards out, respectively.
Allegheny had possession for 44 minutes, never had to punt the ball and relied on the defense to shut out its second opponent this season en route to the conference victory. The Gators held the Yeomen (0-3, 0-1 NCAC) to 104 yards of total offense and allowed only nine first downs over 16 minutes of possession. Oberlin recorded its first first down with 12 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Sid Facaros set up the Allegheny's first touchdown with his third interception of the season to end the first quarter. Griffith capped a 4:05, eight-play drive with a 22-yard catch from Salopek to go ahead 6-0. The Gators added six more points before halftime with a three-yard rush from Mastrogiacomo for a 12-0 lead.
On its second drive of the third quarter, Allegheny started on the Oberlin 49 and used only two plays before Salopek found Hartford for the 34-yard touchdown. Josh Brannan's (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) kick was good for a 19-point advantage.
Ryan Zipf, who entered the game 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts, put the last three points on the board for the Gators with a 25-yarder at the 8:04 mark of the fourth quarter.
Not seeing much time on the field today, the defense was led by Andy Schleihauf with six tackles including a sack for a loss of three yards. Kyle Wilson posted his second straight game with an interception to go along with two tackles.
The Gators return to action on Saturday against Wabash. Game time is 1 p.m.
