Miller scores early; Karr sets shutout record in Senior Day win

Box Score

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Senior Ashley Miller scored a goal just 39 seconds after the opening whistle while Emily Karr broke the all-time Allegheny College women's soccer record for shutouts in a season, leading the Gators on Senior Day with a 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Earlham.

In the first minute, Miller threaded her way into the left side of Earlham's 18-yard box, accepted a pass from Georgia Frost and pounded a shot past Quaker goalkeeper Megan Holthaus for the game's only tally.

The shutout was Karr's ninth of the year, breaking a four-way tie with Karyn Howe (1997), Beth Van Parys (2005) and Michelle Welker (2006), who had eight clean sheets apiece.

Karr also moved into a tie for second place on the Allegheny career shutouts list with 15. She is now even with Van Parys (2002-05). Deb Klinefelter (1987-90) is atop the career shutouts list with 21.

With a penalty-kick opportunity in the 57th minute, Allegheny had an opportunity to extend Saturday's lead to 2-0. Monica Schaffer took the shot, but missed wide left.

After their goal, the Gators did not record another shot on net until the 82nd minute. They peppered Holthaus with four shots over a four-minute span and then held off a late Earlham push, which culminated in a corner kick with 16 seconds left.

Holthaus finished with four saves for the Quakers (9-4-0, 2-1-0).

Allegheny (10-4-1, 3-1-1) will be in action next on Wednesday against Hiram. The contest, which will be the Gators' final home game of the regular season, will begin at 7:30 p.m.
